This story was an example of running long. It was intended to be a short story, which turned into a novella.
Professional publishing is hard enough to achieve. Novellas are near impossible, because they're not a novel, and they're too long for most magazines that publish short fiction.
The common thread to most rejection slips that the novella garnered was that they said it was too long for their magazine. All the editors that indicated they read all or part of the story did like it. Knowing by the common positive reaction that the story will someday succeed, I expanded the story into novel form. The table of contents is listed below, and the opening chapters are linked.
